How to arrive to Punta del Este
Flying to Uruguay
If flying from outside South America, we recommend planning for a layover in São Paulo, Miami, Panama or Madrid, as these are airports with a larger number of flights inbound from around the world.
If flying into São Paulo (Brazil) or Buenos Aires (Argentina), please note there are two airports in each city: Guarulhos and Congonhas in São Paulo, and Aeroparque and Ezeiza in Buenos Aires. Plan your trip accordingly, taking into account inbound and outbound airports, and layover times. Transit between airports can be time consuming and/or expensive, and will imply checking out your luggage, and checking in again at the new airport.
When planning connecting flights, please take into consideration the Alliances different airlines belong to. This will simplify purchasing tickets and transit between flights:
- SkyTeam Alliance: Air Europa, Gol Linhas Aéreas
- Oneworld Alliance: American Airlines, Iberia, LATAM
- Star Alliance: Copa Airlines, Gol Linhas Aéreas
Travelling from Montevideo to Punta del Este
The inter-city bus service in Uruguay is of good quality. Two bus companies, named COT and COPSA, operate between Montevideo and Punta del Este, both having bus shuttles going from Montevideo’s main bus terminal (Tres Cruces) and from the airport. These buses depart from Terminal Tres Cruces at Montevideo, having a stop at the Carrasco Airport to pick up arriving passengers. Both companies have commercial offices at Tres Cruces Terminal, but only COT has a commercial office at the Carrasco Airport. The distance from Montevideo to Punta del Este is approximately 140km, which takes the bus about 2 hours from Montevideo.
Airport Bus Stop: The Bus Stop is located on the far right of the Airport Exit. Do mind that buses with destinations other than Punta del Este also call at the Airport Stop, therefore, please make sure to check that the sign stating the destination at the upper front of the bus you are going to board reads: “Punta del Este”.
Bus Schedule: Buses to Punta del Este pass by the airport approximately every 30 minutes. If you want detailed information, go to the web site of Terminal Tres Cruces. In Spanish ‘schedule’ is ‘horario’, and ‘destination’ is ‘destino’, select “MONTEVIDEO” and “PUNTA DEL ESTE” on your right. You can also find this information in the web pages of the bus companies: COT schedule and COPSA schedule. For those buses bounded for Punta del Este that go by the Airport, the time it takes to go from Tres Cruces to the Airport is about 30 minutes, so in these cases the time of arrival to the Airport is the time of departure from Terminal Tres Cruces plus 30 minutes (approximately).
Bus Tickets: You can buy the ticket on the bus after boarding, or in case of choosing COT, at the counter on their commercial office near the Airport bus stop. It is convenient to buy the ticket before boarding the bus in order to secure a seat. The Bus fare from Carrasco Airport to Punta del Este is 288U$ (Uruguayan pesos, UYU), which is about 10 U$S (American dollars, USD). Buses boarded at Tres cruces or at the Punta del Este Terminal have a boarding tax fare in addition to the regular fare, which for Tres Cruces is 16$ (0.5 U$S). Money exchange are 24 hours open in the Airport Hall, where you will also find Automatic Teller Machines that have better exchange rates.
